Among the multitude of methods and techniques through which one can effectively affect and decidedly improve health, Su Jok stands out as one of the best. When choosing a treating method, one should look out for one, which is effective, safe and easy to apply. Su Jok as a continuously theoretically and practically expanding treatment, deriving from Korean traditional medicine, meets these basic standards and therefore is considered as one of the best organized systematized ways one may use to improve all levels of health and living.
If we wanted to be accurate about this kind of treatment we would say that Su Jok is a very straight forward application of the fundamental laws governing all life. “Su” is the Korean word for “hand” and “Jok” the one for “foot” and that suggests that we treat specific areas of the hand or foot to restore good health, alleviate pain, treat specific syndroms etc. Although all that is very true, still there’s more about Su Jok that meets the eye (or the mind).
I had the privilege of undertaking lessons with South Korean Professor Park Jae Woo (1942-2010) for 4 years a charismatic teacher and individual who always made it clear throughout his lessons that you can not take spirituality away from treatment. That we are all organic - mental-emotional - spiritual beings (whether we realize or not). That spirituality is the fundamental key at the core of treating such beings as we humans are.
Being an instructor of the method for 15 years, I can’t help but still marvel at the journey the Su Jok therapist takes across a vast sea of data, comprehension, knowledge and activity. Beginning as a student, one is called to interconnect info about health and life itself that previously was considered not interrelated. Then, through practice one understands the fundamental issue of intention, and how that is consciously used to ensure the outcome.
Thus, Su Jok does not remain at the base level of applying seeds, warming specific areas on hands and feet, massaging them or perform acupuncture on them. It transforms into a very important key for great understanding of health in depth. A key that all therapists should strive to find since their ultimate goal is to bring a human being into that state of organic, mental, emotional and spiritual balance.
